Bank advances

Rules 22-48

Rule 22 sets how the aggregate average advances made by the rural branches of a scheduled bank are computed for the bad and doubtful debt deduction under section 31(1) [Table: Sl. No. 1].

The computation (sub-rule 1).

  1. For each rural branch, aggregate the advances outstanding at the end of the last day of each month in the tax year.
  2. Divide each branch's sum by the number of months for which outstanding advances were taken into account.
  3. Add up the resulting figures for all rural branches. That total is the aggregate average advances made by the rural branches of the scheduled bank.

Definitions (sub-rule 2). "Rural branch" and "scheduled bank" have the meanings in sections 66(26) and 2(98).

In practice. The figure is a month-end average per branch, summed across branches — not an average of the bank's total advances — so branch-wise month-end data has to be kept.
